Booster stations contain pumps which give a ‘boost’ to the dredger’s pumps making it possible to transport dredged material over longer distances.

Extra pumping force

Booster stations can be used with trailing suction hopper dredgers and cutter suction dredgers. Sometimes multiple pumps are used along the discharge pipeline, providing additional power to the discharge pumping system of these dredgers. The dredger and booster stations together can then reach long distances.
Boosters may be based on land or on a floating platform and may be almost as powerful as the dredger they are supplementing. Occasionally, they are placed on the deck of a vessel but usually they are attached to the floating pipeline along its way from ship to shore.
